About Roslyn Country Club

History of Roslyn Country Club

Roslyn Heights is a hamlet and is considered part of the Greater Roslyn area, which is anchored by the Village of Roslyn. In the late 1940s, local builder Levitt & Sons, the builders of Levittown, started an upscale subdivision of 668 homes in part of Roslyn Heights known as the Roslyn Country Club. The homes in the Country Club section, an area three-quarters of a square mile in size, were upscale versions of those mass-produced homes in Levittown. Builders sweetened the appeal of a house or lot purchase with the promise of a neighborhood Country Club exclusively for residents’ use and set the dues at $100 a year. Homes in Country Club sold first typically for about $17,000 while ranch homes built in Levittown in 1949 sold for around $8,000. The Country Club homes were constructed with more square footage and usually were built on a third of an acre to give kids room to roam.

The Country Club area began experiencing a renaissance of sorts beginning in the late 1990’s. Contractors, realizing the older homes would give them access to big lots, began replacing them with larger more lavish estates. Over time, the exclusive club for residents with the pools shut down but, recently the Town of North Hempstead signed an agreement to buy a seven-acre parcel of the 10 1⁄2-acre former property and turn it into a park to include a renovated facility with a pool, tennis court and clubhouse amenities. The action is subject to the dismissal of a lawsuit filed by a small number of homeowners, which is still on going so fingers crossed!

History of The Royalton at Roslyn Country Club

Industrialist Edward Moore commissioned the estate house on its original 150 acres in 1918 which was completed in 1922. In the early 1950’s, the estate was transformed into the Roslyn Country Club neighborhood in and the house continued a proud history of affairs for decades. The 10.5-acre Gold Coast pool and tennis club was the social center of the community, a place children could walk to. It also had a catering facility, now the Royalton that is still functioning today.
